AML Oceanographic Job Board

Electrical Engineer

Description

Electrical Engineer — AML Group

The AML Story

We've come a long way. AML has 52 years of experience designing and building oceanographic instrumentation and we have clocked consistent year-on-year growth of greater than 15%. We have customers on all seven continents. We have a 70+ person team of employees that care deeply about customer outcomes. In our market, we are known for two things: 1) Going to the ends of the earth to make our customers successful; and 2) Bringing fresh ideas to an established market.

Earlier this year, we were acquired by Union Park Capital. Our mission? To drive the success of Union Park's marine technology thesis. AML is the operating foundation of that thesis, and our focus is on growing the core business while carefully extending our solution set via acquisition. We anticipate dramatic growth and significant change in the next 3 to 5 years.

How we Operate

At AML, we do things a bit differently. Think daily huddles. Think Rockefeller Habits, Scaling Up, and the One Page Plan. Think town hall meetings with on-the-fly Q&A sessions. If you are familiar with these concepts - or they are of interest to you - then you might be a fit for AML. We want people who want to commit their hands, their heads, and their hearts to their position. You see this commitment in our employee Glass Door rating: an impressive 4.70 on 5.00.

Your Mission

Build electronics that hold up at sea. You'll own electrical design from blank schematic through manufacturing handoff. Your designs should pass stage gates the first time and survive corrosion, pressure, thermal extremes, and EMI in the field. They should ship on the date we committed to, at a cost that makes sense at volume. Your biggest contribution will be simple to state: validated electrical designs, delivered on commitment.

What You'll be Accountable For

  • Owns On-Time, On-Budget (Time) Delivery: Is my work on time and to time budget?
  • Owns First-Pass Design Quality: Do my designs pass stage gates with minimal modification?
  • Owns Component Selection Discipline: Are my BOM choices defensible on cost, lead time, and availability?
  • Owns Tier 2 Engineering Support: When issues arise, are escalated NCs and RCAs completed as expected?
  • Owns Forward Risk: Are electrical-domain risks surfaced before first build?
  • Owns Transition Package: Does Manufacturing have everything needed to build this in a scalable manner?
  • Owns Cost of Quality: Do my designs reduce scrap, rework, and unit cost in production?

Some Other Daily Duties

  • Aligns with firmware and mechanical counterparts on interfaces and assembly.
  • Discussion and conversation with key suppliers.
  • Mentors junior engineers and engineering technologists; reviews their designs and provides coaching.
  • Conducts technical interviews for new engineering hires; provides written assessment.
  • Contributes to AML's internal design standards, design reviews, and engineering playbooks beyond own projects.
  • Drafts invention disclosures; supports patent application drafting with external counsel when innovation warrants.
  • Sporadic support for acquisition diligence on target's design portfolio, IP, and engineering capability.

Your Skills & Competencies

  • Hardware Design Fluency: Schematic and PCB design at depth. DFT, DFM, HDI working knowledge; first-pass designs delivered with minimal revisions.
  • Diagnostic Discipline: Past surface symptoms to underlying mechanism. Comfort with "we don't know yet" until data lands.
  • Manufacturing-Aware Design: Designs that build, calibrate, and test reliably at production volume. Manufacturing reality considered at the schematic stage.
  • Component Selection Sense: Component cost, lead time, second-source availability, obsolescence — all visible at design time, not after first-build.
  • Field-Reliability Sense: Electrical failure modes at sea — corrosion, pressure, thermal, EMI, sealing. Catches them at design review.
  • Cross-Discipline Communication: Firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing counterparts kept in sync. Interface contracts surfaced at design review, not first-build.

Required Qualifications (must have)

  • Education: B.Eng in Electrical Engineering (or related: Electronics, Computer Eng, Engineering Physics)
  • Software: 3+ years in Altium Designer (schematic + PCB layout + library). 3+ boards taken from blank schematic to working production prototype, with at least one 6+ layer mixed-signal design.
  • Spec Driven: 3+ years inside a technical product company (industrial, scientific instrument, sensor, medical, aerospace, defense). At least one product shipped to volume as primary or co-primary EE.
  • Bench Work: 2+ years daily bench work. Fluent with oscilloscope (≥500 MHz), logic analyzer, function generator.
  • Total Experience: Minimum 5 years of workplace Electrical Engineering experience

Desired Qualifications (nice to have)

  • Harsh Environment: 3+ years on field-deployed product in harsh-environment context (marine, subsea, outdoor industrial, aerospace, defense). At least one design improvement traceable to a field RCA they led.
  • Systems Integration: 2+ years multi-product platform / systems integration work — sub-systems shared across SKUs (power, comms, sensor frontends). System-level integration testing experience.
  • Precision Analog: Sensor-frontend or precision-analog design experience — low-noise amplifiers, ≥16-bit ADC interfacing, analog conditioning.
  • Additional Design Experience: Experience with multiple 8+ layer mixed-signal designs, with RF. PLC-based control system knowledge also desirable.
  • Programming: Experience in embedded C projects.
  • Low Voltage Power Systems: Experience with low power systems in remote environments.
