Mission: Root causes, resolutions, and smooth production.

Summary:

The Mechanical Operations Engineer - Instrumentation is tasked with supporting the resolution of customer-facing and internal non-conformances and troubleshoot manufacturing challenges. This role is accountable for conducting root cause diagnosis and driving improvements in product design, process quality, and cost of goods sold (COGS). The Mechanical Operations Engineer operates as both a problem solver and proactive collaborator across manufacturing, operations, design engineering, and customer support teams.

Responsibilities:

Non-Conformance Resolution
  • Diagnose root causes using RCA tools and resolve customer-facing and internal non-conformances.
  • Communicate regularly with customers and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot issues.
  • Continuously improve and accelerate resolution times.
Manufacturing Support and Continuous Improvement
  • Implement design improvements that enhance manufacturability, quality, and COGS.
  • Identify and recommend future manufacturing improvements.
  • Apply manufacturing best practices to support efficient, correct production.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects targeting process optimization and waste reduction.
  • Support smooth transition of design changes into production.
Communication & Teaching
  • Clearly communicate complex technical topics to diverse audiences.
  • Create concise documentation and mentor team members.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in mechanical design and manufacturing excellence.
  • Manage disclosure of sensitive information appropriately.
Mechanical Design Expertise
  • Deliver pragmatic, cost-effective solutions with minimal revisions.
  • Balance cost, quality, and manufacturability in design work.
  • Generate actionable manufacturing improvement ideas.
Stakeholder Engagement
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, and customer-facing teams.
  • Represent AML’s manufacturing philosophy to stakeholders.
Qualifications:
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience applying mechanical design skills in a manufacturing environment.
  • Hands-on experience with RCA tools and structured problem-solving methods.
  • Electronic manufacturing experience strongly preferred.
  • Functional understanding of oceanographic instruments and sensors a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance cost, quality, and manufacturability in design decisions.
  • Comfortable evaluating sourcing options to support cost-effective production.
  • Proven ability to navigate cross-functional environments and influence performance standards.
  • Exceptional communication and teaching abilities; capable of simplifying complex technical content.
  • Comfortable addressing real-time performance gaps and managing complex situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive adherence to standards while maintaining pragmatic problem-solving approach.

Compensation

$70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
